What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a potent psychobiological method that aims to resolve symptoms of stress, shock, and trauma that accumulates in our body, much like practices utilized in indigenous healing ceremonies. SE is designed to resolve traumatic stress and increase the capacity to re-negotiate stress and trauma.

  • It is a Body-Mind (bottom up) approach to healing trauma and increasing resiliency that increases empowerment through understanding the body and increasing sense of agency. Clients learn skills for self-regulation and increased the ability to access functional range of nervous system to promote safety, creativity, compassion, mindfulness, curiosity, openness. and social connection.

  • Peter A. Levine, PhD , is the founder of founder of Somatic Experiencing® . However, it is based on a multidisciplinary intersection of indigenous healing practices, physiology, psychology, ethnology, biology, neuroscience, medical biophysics as well as systems theory, mindfulness, psychodynamic, behavioral and humanistic psychotherapies. It has been clinically applied for more than four decades.

  • Somatic Experiencing® targets the autonomic nervous system, the “motor” that drives symptoms and behaviors. It works in a slow, gentle way that does not overwhelm to re-establish the natural ability of the nervous system to shift between activation and deactivation to unfreezes the body’s ability to respond appropriately to everyday stresses.

  • Somatic Experiencing® helps us release and resolve trauma “stuck” in our body through increased awareness of survival patterns of fight, flight, or freeze. in contrast to traditional talk therapy which has the potential to re-traumatize, SE is focused on the story told by the body and considered a “bottom-up” approach to healing. This allows us to regain access to all the parts of ourselves, experience a full range of emotions from joy to sadness, and reconnect to our body’s innate impulse towards greater mental, physical, and spiritual health.
